             The Island Woods ponds are among our most precious assets;  however, without proper care and maintenance,  we will continue to struggle to preserve the ponds.

Pond Committee Actions

The Pond Committee’s immediate concern is in restoring our Ponds and pond system to its original
condition and keeping it that way.
This means addressing years of deferred maintenance and lack of knowledge and awareness.

Accomplishments to Date

Pond Pumps and water features
Identified and dug out forgotten water feature control valves, cleared pipelines and increased waterfall
flow, improve pond water aeration and maintain proper flow levels into streams.
Pond Water Quality Testing
First test of pond water quality for nutrient levels, nitrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen to create a
baseline to measure treatment results.
Pond Debris Control
Testing muck treatment with beneficial enzymes to reduce bottom layer over time and help suppress
weed growth and build up.
Experimenting with mechanical methods removal of weeds and limbs using grappling hooks cutting
rakes and “DeSkuzzer”.
Pond Weed Control
Working to establish a detailed pond treatment plan prevent or control weed growth before it gets
going.
Reevaluating the measurements, condition and specific preventative treatment requirements of each of
the 12 ponds.
